1 - Update on New "People's Gospel": Jews are "Dogs... Enemies of the Nation..."

Just how long the road to eradicating antisemitism from Christian thinking is underscored in the Center's efforts to remove blatant antisemitic notes from the wildly popular Biblia Latinoamericana (BL), the Spanish-language translation of the New Testament currently available in several languages.

In 1990, Father Bernard Hurault, editor of the BL, returned from Latin America to France where he and his brother Louis translated the "peoples' Gospel" into French and published it as La Bible des Communautes Chretiens, quickly selling tens of thousands of copies.

In 1994, in the publication La Croix, Dr. Menachem Macina of the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium labeled 30 of the notes as "injurious and defamatory ...a violent anti-Judaism that will awaken the old antisemitic demons."

In 1995, the Bishop of Versailles under whose auspices the Bible was published, apologized, cancelled the publication and called for withdrawal of unsold copies. The Paris High Court ordered it removed from the market, and the French Episcopal Conference ordered all French Bishops not to support its publication, later ordering that the ban cover editions in all languages.

However, the Latin American version of the BL which contains 18 highly offensive Notes also came under protest by the Wiesenthal Center last year (see ). Now in its 104"' edition with over 36 million copies in circulation, it is published in Spain by Sociedad Biblica Catholica internacional (SOBICAIN). The offensive Notes include characterization of Jews as scornful of other religions, calling Jews "dogs, ignorant, enemies of the Nation," and statements like "the times of the Jewish religion, a provisional religion, are now overdue to unpardonable sins." Also repeated is the canard of "the Jewish people's domination around the world."

Following Wiesenthal Center protests and consultation with the Episcopal Conferences of all Latin American countries, Colombia ordered an expert study by Father Hugo Fernandez Mora, Director of its Department of Doctrine and Faith. In his report, Father Mora cited "antisemitic elements" and underscored "the need for the translation and the notes to be revised ...."

In spite of the ban by the Episcopal Conference of France and the criticisms of the Latin American Episcopal Conferences, Father Francisco Anta, Director of SOBICAIN, corrected only five of the 18 offensive notes.

World Marketing Campaign

Now comes word of a new promotional campaign in Asia where some 200,000 copies have been sold in China alone. African and Russian editions are also in the works, as well as an Arabic version in Cairo. There is also an Argentine and a five-language CD-ROM edition of the BL.

As for the Hurault brothers: "Why are the Jews interfering? We don't correct their Talmud. They always make trouble. Look at Palestine," they said. "I have been threatened before and I won't be beaten by a Jewish lobby," said Father Hurault in a telephone message left at the Center's Paris office.

2 - New hateful church bible "People's Gospel" - Jews are "Dogs, etc by Bernard Hurault, a French priest

The Wiesenthal Center protested over a hugely popular Latin American Bible with shocking antisemitic references. Published in Spain and edited by Bernard Hurault, a French priest who served in Latin America. More than 34 million copies of La Biblia Latinoamericana have been sold in South America and among the Hispanic communities of the United States.

The 19 offensive notes which were detailed in a study by scholar Menahem Macina, include characterization of Jews as scornful of other religions, calling Jews "dogs", "ignorant", "enemies of the Nation", and statements like "the times of the Jewish religion, a provisional religion, are now over ...due to unpardonable sins."

Also repeated is the canard of "the Jewish people's domination around the world." One note states that "the judgment of God has not yet fallen on the Jewish people."

Dr. Shimon Samuels and Latin American representative Sergio Widder, protested to the Episcopal Conferences of all Latin American countries.

A later study by Father Hugo Fernandez Mora, Director of Columbia's Department of Doctrine and Faith, concluded,
......... . The notes regarding the Jews are in discord with the spirit of Vatican II," admitting that "There are antisemitic elements in the notes" and expressing "the need for the translation and the notes to be revised with the collaboration of international Catholic scholars..."

"We will pursue this issue," said Dr. Samuels, "particularly in view of the fact that the same author, Father Bernard Hurault, has obtained authorization for a French African edition and a Russian version which could further spread the infection of anti-semitism among the faithful."
